  • 2026 PQS Logs

    Ray, I figured it's time to mention a couple of issues with the PQS Logs.

    1. The logs have been missing the Ryan Johnson (LAA, HQID: 8205) 3/30 start @CHI ever since the April 14 logs were posted. His start was in the April 13 logs, but mysteriously dropped out the next day and continues to be "MIA" to date.

    2. Jose Suarez (HQID: 5893). He was selected off waivers by Seattle, May 3, from Atlanta (DFA, May 1). He had a 3/31 home start for ATL vs ATH. The logs now incorrectly reflects his 3/31 start in the "Team" column as SEA (current team) and in the "Vs" column as @ATL (former team). Whatever anomaly causes this issue has in fact been a constant problem beginning with the 2024 PQS Logs and continued to be an issue with last year's PQS Logs as well. As with this year's Jose Suarez log entry, for the past two years as pitchers changed uniforms the PQS Logs would update to reflect the pitchers' new team in the "Team" column for all previous starts made for his former team. Moreover, the updated log entries would then oftentimes incorrectly display the opponent faced in the "Vs" column. More specifically a pitcher's home starts with his former team would also update to incorrectly reflect those same home starts as away starts versus his former team. The aforementioned Jose Suarez start as an example. This issue only worsens as more pitchers are waived or released and then claimed by another team, or traded during the course of the season.

    Going forward, I'm hoping we can see a resolution to this glitch with the PQS Logs and as Barney Fife famously said, "Nip it in the bud."

    NOTE: I actually have a third issue with the PQS Logs regarding the PQS scoring (specifically K/BB ratios) but will address that in a separate message.

    As always Ray, thank you for your time.

    As I briefly mentioned at the end of my previous message, HQ's PQS scoring needs a serious look. As item four of the PQS criteria states, a pitcher must have a 3.0 K/BB ratio, or at least 3 Ks if he had zero walks. I maintain pitchers are not being properly credited a PQS point whenever the K/BB ratio calculates exactly to 3.0 K/1 BB. Specifically, 3 K/1 BB, 6 K/2 BB, 9 K/3 BB, etc. This was a "bug" with both the 2024 and 2025 PQS Logs and continues to be a problem with this year's PQS Logs. NOTE: Pitcher starts of 3 Ks and zero walks and pitcher starts with K/BB ratios greater than 3-to-1 are properly credited with a PQS point.

    It's immediately apparent to me this flaw in the logs can ultimately impact a pitcher's L5 PQS, and a pitcher's season DOM and/or DIS percentages:

    PQS 4 - 5: DOMinant start
    PQS 2 - 3: DECent start
    PQS 0 - 1: DISaster start.

    PQS Criteria
    1. The pitcher must have gone at least 6 innings.
    2. He must have allowed fewer hits than the number of IP.
    3. He must have struck out at least five batters.
    4. He must have a 3.0 k/bb ratio, or at least 3 Ks if he had zero walks.
    5. He must not allow any home runs..

    I think the following two log entries for Seth Lugo (HQID: 5098) best illustrate the K/BB quirk's impact on a pitcher's L5 PQS and season DOM/DIS percentages.

    Two starts (4/26 and 5/2):

    4/26:
    IP: 6, H: 14, HR: 1, BB: 1, K: 3 || HQ PQS Scoring: IP>=6, 1 Pt; H<IP, 0 Pt; K>=5, 0 Pt; K/BB>=3:1, 0 Pt; HR=0, 0 Pt || HQ PQS Score = 1, HQ DOM/DIS = DIS

    IP: 6, H: 14, HR: 1, BB: 1, K: 3 || My PQS Scoring: IP>=6, 1 Pt; H<IP, 0 Pt; K>=5, 0 Pt; K/BB>=3:1, 1 Pt; HR=0, 0 Pt || My PQS Score = 2, My DOM/DIS = DEC

    5/2:
    IP: 6, H: 8, HR: 0, BB: 2, K: 6 || HQ PQS Scoring: IP>=6, 1 Pt; H<IP, 0 Pt; K>=5, 1 Pt; K/BB>=3:1, 0 Pt; HR=0, 1 Pt || HQ PQS Score = 3, HQ DOM/DIS = DEC

    IP: 6, H: 8, HR: 0, BB: 2, K: 6 || My PQS Scoring: IP>=6, 1 Pt; H<IP, 0 Pt; K>=5, 1 Pt; K/BB>=3:1, 1 Pt; HR=0, 1 Pt || My PQS Score = 4, My DOM/DIS = DOM

    The end result is my PQS scoring calculates Lugo's L5 PQS as 3.4, and his season DOM% = 62%, DIS = 0% thru his eight starts as of 5/7. On the other hand, because of the HQ PQS scoring flaw (as I see it), HQ currently reflects Lugo's L5 PQS as 3.0, DOM = 50%, DIS = 12%.

    Including Monday's (May 11) games, I count 100 pitcher entries in which a pitcher hasn't been credited with a PQS point for a K/BB ratio of exactly 3-to-1, i.e. 3 K/1 BB, 6 K/2 BB, 9 K/3 BB, etc. I highlighted this same PQS scoring flaw early in the season last year. Unfortunately, the problem has never been resolved. In the interim, I have incorporated a few of my own formulas that correct the numbers accordingly after importing the .csv file into an Excel worksheet. Frankly, I really shouldn't have to do that. Perhaps we can finally get this PQS scoring irregularity resolved?

    Thank you for your time

      Incidentally, "Blues," Barney Fife was one of the greatest TV characters of all time.
