Either choose them from the "Smilies" dropdown list that is above the box where you enter the text of your "Message:" or else click on them in the "Smilies" box that shows them all (it's on the right of the box where you enter the text of your "Message:"). Is that what you mean?

You may also need to change a setting in Edit>Options....Misc Options......choose Enhanced Interface.
