  • 2025 PQS Logs

    Ray,

As I noted last year, I'm very much a PQS Log disciple. That said, this year I'm seeing several issues with this year's logs.

    1. First and foremost, beginning with the April 12 report, the logs have consistently been a day behind, i.e. April 12 report missing April 11 starts, April 13 report missing April 12 starts, etc. This issue has persisted on a daily basis to include today's report (April 22 report missing April 21 starts).

    2. Missing starting pitcher names (thru today's April 22 report). Currently, I count 22 log entries missing a pitcher name.

    - Brazoban, Huascar: (4/16)
    - Castillo, Luis F.: (4/4, 4/9)
    - Dobbins, Hunter: (4/6, 4/18)
    - Dollander, Chase: (4/6, 4/12, 4/19)
    - Ginn, JT: (4/12, 4/18)
    - Gusto, Ryan: (4/12, 4/18)
    - Henderson, Logan: (4/20)
    - Lord, Brad: (4/8, 4/14, 4/20)
    - Sugano,Tomoyuki: (3/30, 4/5, 4/12, 4/17)
    - Topa, Justin: (4/19)
    - Young, Brandon: (4/19)

NOTE: There is another log entry with a missing pitcher name but it appears to be erroneous. Beginning with the April 16 report, I continue to see a 4/4 start (MLBAMID "815352," no HQID assigned). I have been unable to identify a 2025 starting pitcher with a MLBAM ID of "815352." NOTE: For what it's worth, the PQS log entry is identical to that of Castillo, Luis F. (HQID: 7093, MLBAM ID: 622379).

    3. Lastly, this is an issue I noticed during the off-season when manipulating the 2024 PQS logs and apparently continues to be a problem in 2025. According to the PQS score criteria, a pitcher earns a PQS "point," if he has a 3.0 K/BB ratio or greater, or at least 3 Ks if he had zero walks. Unless I'm misunderstanding the criterion completely, it appears to me there a number of pitchers (63) in the logs that have not received credit (a PQS "point") for meeting that specific measure. Just few examples:

    - 3 Ks and zero walks: Hunter Brown 4/9 start, PQS score reads as "3" and should be "4"). 16 additional log entries not credited a point for 3 Ks/zero walks
    - 3 Ks and one walk: Carlos Carrasco 4/8 start, PQS score reads as "0" and should be "1"). 16 additional log entries not credited a point for 3 Ks/one walk
    - 6 Ks and two walks: Logan Allen 4/15 start, PQS score reads as "3" and should be "4"). 23 additional log entries not credited a point for 6 Ks/two walks
    - 9 Ks and three walks: Jack Flaherty 4/9 start, PQS score reads as "3" and should be "4"). 4 additional log entries not credited a point for 9 Ks/three walks

I hope I've described the last issue as I see it clearly enough. Of course, if I'm totally off-base with my understanding of the K/BB metric please advise. As always Ray, thank you for your time.

First two should be pretty easy to fix, I'll ping tech. Third one will require a little research on my end and I'm traveling this week... I'll dig into it this weekend-ish.

        Ray,

I reviewed the logs yesterday and today and the .csv files have been updating correctly with the previous day's pitching starts. All of the log entries I noted that were missing the starting pitcher names were corrected yesterday as well. Unfortunately, yesterday's 4/24 report reflected a 4/23 LA @ CHI start missing a pitcher name (Ben Casparius, HQID: 8087, MLBAMID: 676508) and a name is still missing from the entry today. It's only one pitcher at this point, I just hope it isn't the beginning of a new trend of missing pitcher names going forward.

As far as the mysterious CWS 4/4 missing name start (MLBAMID "815352," no HQID assigned) is concerned, I noticed yesterday we had a name (Bonemer, Caleb) plugged into the log entry. Now that we have a name to the log entry, it's more than safe to say it's an erroneous entry and requires immediate deletion. Caleb Bonemer is a White Sox 2024 amateur draft pick and has been playing for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (Carolina League) since the beginning of the minor league season.

Re my last issue - (K/BB). I assumed it was going to take some time to figure out what's going on with the math. Just wanted to make HQ aware of the problem.

Overall, you and the tech folks continue to do great work and I sincerely appreciate HQ's prompt responses and the swift actions taken to address my concerns. Thank you.

Yeah, we have a known issue with Bonemer's record in a few places. I'm pretty sure someone else started that CHW game on 4/4, we'll get that cleaned up.

            Ray,

I figured now that we've just surpassed the season's "quarter pole" this would be a good time to revisit the continuing issues with this year's PQS logs.

            1. Missing starting pitcher names (thru today's May 13 report). Currently, I count 21 valid log entries missing a pitcher name. For what it's worth, with the exception of Gilbert and McCullers, the common thread is all of the following 12 pitchers listed made their first-ever MLB career start in 2025. In the case of Gilbert and McCullers, they hadn't made a previous MLB start since 2022.

            - HQID: 8010, Blubaugh, AJ: (4/30)
            - HQID: 8117, Cameron, Noah: (4/30)
            - HQID: 8087, Casparius, Ben: (4/23)
            - HQID: 8204, Dreyer, Jack: (4/29, 5/5)
            - HQID: 8019, Eisert,Brandon: (4/27)
            - HQID: 8141, Evans,Logan: (4/27, 5/4, 5/10)
            - HQID: 6821: Gilbert,Tyler: (4/25, 4/26,4/29)
            - HQID: 8138, Hoglund,Gunnar: (5/2, 5/7)
            - HQID: 7967, Kolek,Stephen: (5/4, 5/10)
            - HQID: 4924, McCullers Jr.,Lance: (5/4, 5/10)
            - HQID: 8118, Nikhazy, Doug: (4/26)
            - HQID: 8247, Petty, Chase: (4/30, 5/11)

            2. There are two additional entries (4/4 and 4/9) missing a pitcher name and the HQID: 8216 provided equates to Jose M. Fermin but are invalid and need to be deleted. Fermin never started those two games, instead the games were started by Jose Soriano (4/4) and Yusei Kikuchi (4/9) and the log entries for those two starts/pitchers are already correctly reflected in the report.

            3. Although the log entry that at one time reflected a CWS 4/4 start by Caleb Bonemer has been changed to a different player name (Anderson Brito) it's still invalid and requires deletion. Brito never started that game and has in fact been pitching for the Astros' "Sally" league affiliate. That specific 4/4 game was started by Jonathan Cannon and is correctly reflected in the report.

            4. The report is missing a 5/4 NYM start by Blade Tidwell, HQID unknown and his MLBAMID is 694918. NOTE: Tidwell's first-ever MLB career start.

            5. For several days, the two PQS log entries for Luis F. Castillo (HQID: 7093) show BAL in the "Team" column. Castillo was recently (5/8) traded by Seattle to Baltimore, but the "Team" column should indicate SEA for his 4/4 and 4/9 starts. The 4/9 entry, which was a SEA home start vs HOU for Castillo, shows @SEA (his former team) in the "Vs" column. This specific type of issue was a constant problem with last year's PQS Logs as pitchers were waived or released and then claimed by another team, or traded during the course of the season. The log entries would incorrectly display the pitchers' new team in the "Team" column and would also oftentimes incorrectly display the opponent faced in "Vs" column.

            6. Lastly, the issue regarding 3.0 K/BB ratios still requires resolution. Specifically, pitchers are still not being awarded a PQS point for 3 Ks and zero walks, 3 Ks and one walk, 6 Ks and two walks, and 9 Ks and three walks. Back in April when I first noted the problem, there were 63 log entries affected. Since then the number of log entries affected has nearly doubled to its current number of 112 entries thru today's report. It's readily apparent to me that many of the entries missing a K/BB PQS point impacts a pitcher's DOM / DIS percentages.

As always Ray, thank you for your time.
