  • Team Depth Charts - Team Pages

Ray - Can you help me understand why on the individual team pages you have free agents still listed on the teams they played for last year? Both Kyle Gibson (12% PT) and Lance Lynn (9% PT) still show up on the Cardinals individual team pages. I understand that you have a green "F" next to those players on the overall depth charts but these players should not appear under the team pages. You have 21% PT for two pitchers who may or may not pitch for the Cardinals this late in the offseason. If we try and create our depth charts with PT and we have those players listed - Kyle Gibson is listed as the Home SP for the Cardinals - it is confusing and not accurate. .

On the old site we had a concept of a "free agent team" that we would park those guys on at this time of year. We don't have that here, so we leave them on their old team until they sign somewhere (or, in the next week or three, we'll zero out their projection). Note that it does NOT affect the team-level playing time... we aren't counting Gibson's projected innings in the Cardinals team allotment. No other Cardinal is being under-projected because Gibson is listed there.

Why are you unable to go to the concept you had on the old site at this point in the offseason? I generally use the team page depth charts because of your detailed PT by position. For players who are free agents - I need to use additional clicks to go to the overall team pages or even to Fangraphs Roster Resource to check whether Gibson, Lynn, or Corbin and others really do play for the teams you have them listed for.

I think I answered that above. If the remaining FAs don't sign in the next week or so, we'll zero them out and move them off their teams. But right now, we think it's better to have Gibson with a projection in the projected player pool, on the expectation they will sign somewhere.

Oh I get it. You cannot have a projection for any of these pitchers without putting them on some team. I thought you could still have a projection for these pitchers but not a part of the team depth charts. I understand but I would prefer the old way better where you could have a projection but they didn't show up on the team depth chart which is a bit misleading. I get it. Thanks for explanation.

            Yes, that's the issue.

I just went through and cleaned up some of the lesser guys who are still FAs, zeroed them out for now. There are still some innocuous relievers with PT% still on their old teams, but I don't think anyone cares about them.

The FAs that "matter", that are still on the depth charts, are: Verdugo, JD Martinez, Gibson, Lynn, Corbin, Kimbrel, Robertson So it's not a lot of guys to account for. They're all flagged with the 'F'.

On the team depth chart for Houston - you only have 45% holds allocated at this point. I thought you were trying to get to at least 100% at this point and if you were over by some percentage you would allocate down as opening day approaches. Would it be possible to get Houston closer to that 100% holds level?

May I make a parallel request for the Depth Charts? Could they be given their own link on the Tools drop-down menu? Or could there be a landing page for Stats and Tools, with a full range of links, as there are for the other main headings (News, Prospects, etc.)?

There is a link to the Depth Chart Center (where they are all aggregated) under News. Maybe that's less intuitive, I don't know... but we were trying to keep the Tools list from getting endless (esp in season).
