  • Hit Rate for batters

How is it calculated? I'd guess (H-HR)/(AB - HR - K), but can't find the formula anywhere and I'd like to check the number for several of my batters to see how flukey they are right now (or not). Thanks. BTW, I'm presuming that 30% is also the norm for hitters (based on the 30% for pitchers).

Formula's correct as you wrote it. The entire league population should hit at a 30% rate, I would imagine, although I've never checked it. But individual hit rates don't regress toward 30% as pitchers do. The research by Patrick Davitt in the 2004 Baseball Forecaster showed that hitters establish their own historical hit rate over time, and if they deviate from that in a particular season once it's established, they will tend to revert back to their historical level in the following year.

Thanks. I now remember reading the part about the regression to 30% only being for pitchers. I guess I need to look at the last couple of years as well.
