Player Names

I use the player projection files to link to the player files in a fantasy game I play. There are differences in the player name formats, so I created a cross reference table to merge information from the two sources. I have noticed numerous occasions where the players first names in the projection file change slightly (Robert to Bob, William to Bill, Joe to Joey, etc.), requiring me to update my cross reference file.

I was just curious if there any reason for these changes?

I think it's an issue with our stats provider, but I'm not sure. In most cases, it's a case where a new player gets added to our database when he first gets called up, then shortly after his name gets "cleaned up".

Yep that's it. Some players we add to the site before they ever appear in a stats feed. Then when they first appear in the stats feed, their name is updated.
