Coincidentally, I stumbled onto a game show today that does this. It's called "Chain Reaction." A board with seven word slots is set up. They give you the first word and the last word. It's up to you to guess the next word in either direction. For example:

    1. Friendly
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5.
    6.
    7. Effective

You can guess at #2 ("friendly... ") or #6 ("effective ..."). As each word is filled in, you move on to the next pair (#2 and #3, or #6 and #5, and so on.)

The two chains don't exactly meet in the middle. If the only open slot left is #4, you can guess a word that goes with either #3 or #5. It would be pretty hard (I think) to find many phrases where a word works as either the first word or the second word.

I can see that Tom had a productive day off today.

Monkeeman threw a monkee wrench in the whole thing...

I think polysaccharide typically comes before 'gum,' not after. In any event, I'll keep it going with -

    chain

Not sure if this fits the spirit

Seems to be a synonym, not a natural follow to "gum"

Changing to synonyms makes this game even easier... polysaccharides are carbohydrates, right?

I'll wager it cannot be done. Our language is too diverse, too extensive, too flexible. English pulls root words from Latin, Greek, German, Italian, French, Spanish (OK, German and all the Romance languages) not to mention words from new technology and cultural developments. If people have the interest this thread could run a long, long, long time. Guaranteed longest thread in "tech support" ever.

Oh, I was thinking of Monkey Man by the Stones, hence the "?". It's a song I'm compelled to turn up every time I hear it.

Also a Rolling Stones song called Monkey Man.

What's the criteria? If no one can use it in a sentence?

    Oh and -
